Disappointed? Now What

I wish I was like David. He was so bold and courageous that He always took His cares to the Lord. I know that Peter encourages us to cast our cares unto God, but that’s much more easier said than done. It’s easy to surrender a struggle you are experiencing, like having a financial lack, health concerns or other obstacles. But how can we surrender our disappointments to God? How can we surrender our frustration in the waiting period? If we are honest with ourselves we can’t hide anything from God. So we deceive ourselves by thinking that failing to say “ God I’m disappointed because……” means the disappointment doesn’t exist.

We get disappointed because something doesn’t happen when we want it to or when we thought it would. When God is merely saying “it is not this appointment” ..  The appointed time is coming and this simply isn’t it. Trusting God is trusting His appointments. Believing that His timing is perfect. He will bring it to pass at the best time. 

The hardest part about disappointment is when you have no control over the end result. You can’t cause what you want to happen- can’t will it or declare it, because God is the one who has to bring it to pass.  This puts the responsibility of the appointment on God, so when it doesn’t happen we place the disappointment on God.  I hate to admit it but there were times where I felt like God disappointed me. I felt like I had my hopes up and it didn’t happen. He promised it and it didn’t happen. I told Him that I was disappointed in Him. He said that it just wasn’t “ this appointment”.  The truth is I was disappointed because I didn’t get what I wanted when I thought I should have gotten it. I was focused on what I thought was good for me instead of submitting to what God knows is BEST for me. It wasn’t God that disappointed me, it was my trust in what I wanted that disappointed me. ( The fact that this paragraph has so many “I” is proof that my whole perspective was skewed and self centered. The focus was on Me, Me, Me and not on God).

Just because something is delayed it doesn’t mean that it’s not promised. So I asked Him how do I wait- He said silently…..with expectant hope. What it all boils down to is– trust. Do I trust God to do what He said He would do? Do I trust that His plans are good? Do I trust that His timing is Good? Do I believe His word?

I’ve met so many people who have become bitter and hate God because they prayed for something and it didn’t happen. In their mind they did the right thing- They prayed. But to them their prayers were  not answered because they didn’t get the answers they wanted. So what happens when our prayer are “unanswered”—— some become disappointed in God because they didn’t get what they wanted. It might even go as far as people no longer believing in God .  But I know that’s not the response God wants from us. If you are like me you want to know the reasons behind certain things and there are times we just won’t know. We believe God and believe that in His sovereignty all that He does works out for our good. 

 It doesn’t always feel good. Sometimes it’s suffering physically or emotionally but God promises to be there in the suffering! It may mean being disappointed but God promises that He will give us comfort!  Two weeks in a row I was met with disappointment and I can’t say I handled them the best. It’s like I was tired of feeling and hoping. But without hope what do we have! God is our expectant hope! If I place my trust and hope in Him I will never be disappointed. Why? Because He is Not a man that He should lie, what He says, He will do! Our only responsibility is to believe and wait with expectation.

In Genesis, before God sent the flood it says that He was grieved in His heart because of the violence in the world. Basically what He created to be good, became full of sin and disobedience. Even in the midst of the grieving, God’s love was present. The word said that Noah had favor in the sight of the Lord. It doesn’t say why, he just did. Noah didn’t earn it God gave it to him. God loves us and although we give Him many reasons to be disappointed in us He still responds in love, grace and mercy. He shows us favor—— He gave us His Son! What’s there to be disappointed about… in light of Jesus nothing can compare.

 How dare I say God I’m disappointed in You—— God doesn’t owe me anything. I have a forgiven life which I don’t deserve.

Disappointment is a natural response but we can’t let it negate the truth that we know about God. 

I really believe that we have to get to the place where we don’t allow our worldly desires/wants to have a bondage effect on us. When the devil realizes that we put our happiness or hope in these “expectations” he can easily use it to pull us away from God. Writing that makes me think of the scripture ” Where your treasure is there your heart will be also( Luke 12:34).” If our greatest desire is seeking the kingdom of God that’s where we will spend ourselves. We have to check our hearts and understand why we are disappointed.

 Is it because we have placed our hope in our wants instead of God? We believe and serve God not because He gives us what we want but because we commit our lives to Him.

I wanted to shed some light on what I’ve been through and what others might be going through. Let’s ask God for His perspective when we feel disappointed. Ask ourself : are we disappointed or are we impatient? Are we failing to trust God with EVERY AREA of our life? You know how some of us are: “ you can have this God but nooo don’t even come close to this please”)”. We are in the beginning of a new year and there’s so much to come, regardless of how our prayers are answered may we always remember who holds our life in the palm of His hand!

I pray that with every disappointment we may feel, we will let God reappoint us to what really matters: Trusting Him with every aspect of our life! Asking God to show us what our disappointment say about us as a person, because I can guarantee that it says nothing about Him as a Good and faithful Father!
